Vastu Shastra is a very important aspect when selecting a home for you. For many years now, I have observed my parents vetting out houses based on Vastu. Everything from the direction of the doors and windows to the placement of the kitchen, everything was taken into account. Many people make the mistake of using Vastu interchangeably with Feng Shui. They seem to be the same but there are many subtleties that put them apart.

Today I will tell you about Vastu Shastra and also give you a few tips in accordance with it.

What is Vastu Shastra:

Let us first understand what Vastu really is before moving forward.

As many of you already know, Vastu Shastra is a traditional system of architecture. It originated in India. Vastu Shastra literally translates to “the science of architecture.” Many texts have been found in our country which describes, in great detail, the principles that should be followed while designing a house. These principles include design, layout, measurements, ground preparation, space arrangement, and spatial geometry.

Vastu Shastra is meant to amalgamate architecture and nature. It views the buildings around us as living things having life or Prana. Basically it helps you live in peaceful co-existence with nature itself. It helps you attract and retain positive energies from nature and repel any negative vibrations that might harm you.

Vastu for home:

There are many different branches to Vastu Shastra. There is Vastu for home and house parts. There is one branch that deals with the defects in corners as well as which direction your house faces. Today I’ll be giving you tips regarding Vastu for home. This deals with the orientation of your house.

A home is a place you live in and it makes sense to have more and more positive energy pour into it.

  • For your bedroom, it should be a square or a rectangle. The master bedroom should be in the south-west direction and be bigger than the other rooms in the house. The bed should be towards the south or west wall so that while sleeping your legs are pointed towards the north or east. The bed should never be aligned to any corners. Bathrooms should be on the North or West side and never face the bed. Also, your mirror should never reflect you while sleeping.
  • For your kitchen, the placement is important as it represents the fire element. The best direction, according to Vastu Shastra is the South-east. North and North-east is the worse and is a serious Vastu defect. avoid placing the kitchen under/above any prayer rooms, bedrooms, and toilets. You should always cook facing east, it is preferable.
  • Prayer rooms are the most important rooms in an Indian household. Since you store all your religious belongings in this room, it should be rid of all negative energies. The best location for your Pooja Room is the North-east corner of your house. If for any reason, it isn’t available then East or West side of your house is acceptable as well. Keep the idols in the east or west of the prayer room and they should be a few inches away from the wall. It is highly auspicious if the Pooja Room is shaped like a Pyramid. The Pooja Room should never be in the South direction.
